BHEL Engineer Trainee Recruitment test 2010;Experience

04 Nov

Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited Recruits more than 400 people in Mechanical, Electronics and Electrical disciplines. My Centre was at S.R.M University Chennai.

Admit Card was available weeks before the exam unlike other exams bty PSUs. BHEL had a rather unattractive website for checking out the application procedure. It was the same old mantra of taking SBI challan filling up journal number applying online , print and post. Admit card was downloaded from there website.

I didn’t know the venue of exam. But we know when there are young men and women, or college goers they make a fuss out of it. I could see overcrowded buses. People hanging out with toe fingers on the footboards of buses. People frantically looking at admit cards to get a clue on how to get to the venue. Thanks to the organisers they had clearly mentioned how to get there via bus or train from Chennai and the time taken. So the travel problem was much of an issue after all.

Inside the bus the conductor seemed to be extra friendly. In chennai public transport is mostly Government operated. So we would expect the conductor to be over proud man. Bu this guy who was called “Sir” by the passengers said that “looks like that  sir on the footboard haven’t told home that he will return” He asked people inside to make some space inside. While he was collecting the tickets and unable to move through the jam pack people would pass the money  and mention the stops and amount and the balance was duly returned to the passenger by co-passengers. The conductor also shouted out that the Government is taking you for discount rate and if you are found without ticket there would be a fine of Rs 500. Don’t tell that the conductor didn’t come to you for giving tickets. A Happy silent crowd and a jovial conductor, The jam inside was not an issue at all.

The exam was conducted in various blocks of the polytechnic, Valliammal Engineering College, Biomedical Engineering block and many other blocks. The candidates were let in at the exact time after due checking of the hall tickets. 24o Questions to be answered in two and half hours. Brilliant. Also the questions had lesser problems and more theory. While there were questions about steel ores and properties I was lost in time and space and turned the Question paper to check whether it was BHEL or SAIL exam. Problems on 12th standard physics. Force on inclined plane checked patience while some familiar flow and viscosity measurement device names were also asked. The English section had correct spelling choosing questions also. That implies that most engineers do not know proper spelling according to BHEL. And there were the usual aptitude questions and comparison of fractional numbers.

An idea about the number of candidates was understood when I stood for bus at waiting shelter while 6 traffic police guided the crowd and the vehicles on NH. I waited for half an hour and still the crowd was not cleared. Many people moved to previous bus stops while there was a huge gathering at Potheri Railway station for the Suburban train. A single 9 car train swept the station clean of people. Everyone stood  in the otherwise empty train till Chennai Park railway station.
