Monarchs of the modern world, a wild fantasy of United States media

If you are like me, working with engineering skills and observing the ever-growing technology world. Then it is easy to see the elephants of the technology world, through regular media, who indulge in providing with thoughts and reasons of the champions running for the cause of technology. However, being an observant, for some time, will showcase the poverty of the media, where they stick with one person and keep boosting their news and opinions.

Historically, we can see from the US media lens, which shows to the world, of its unquenchable thirst for development in technology and focus on technology leaders. Listing the last three can clearly give us an idea- Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Elon Musk. One may argue that Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were co-existent in time. They way they were projected directly seem to depend on their influence on the industry, which may be correct. While Bill Gates changed his role from being technology leader to charity after Microsoft saga. Steve Jobs was prominent in media.

Google Search Trends for Bill Gates is here.. to help us.

Comparison of Monarchs

Google Trends shows us the popularity of the searches. Here I am comparing three names and the peaks for red (Steve Jobs) subside peak for blue (Elon Musk). While being alive may be a factor to create news. It is also noted, that co-occurrence is not. We do not find a Yellow peak anywhere in last 5 years.

Media therefore projects a single leader, as a representational head or say Monarch of the technology world to be followed. That is a trend with US media atleast. Elsewhere, we can discuss about politicians, while here my concern is about the technology leaders. Having paid/unpaid media projection of a single leader, is not conducive to the environment of technology industry. How many companies exist ? And work hard every second to bring new technologies and utilities to the smart-phone carrying person (not a common man). Some appear in media, some do not. However, the US media seems to be programmed to project a higher level of focus on some select individuals. So is Steve Jobs a role-model for the young teenager who wants to start a company? No, human mind is super-industrious, it will find its own way to its destiny. With media or no, there are amazing levels of talent and great unsung leaders at every desk. They need no media. Their work shows their spirit. The best a young techno-entrepreneur can do may be sit up straight, avoid the mainstream media to remove the unwanted influence of the modern monarchy in their current work, and slog away in their paths to success.

I came across this book accidentally. My lab mate had this book on his table for a long time. I see it sometimes on this desk , even now. I am not sure if it is an illusion. What captured my attention was the cover. The design of the cover than the name.

And the cover designer did a wonderful job in that. In the beginning of the book , the author says that incremental efforts and improvements do not help build a lasting company. The competition builds up as more imitators join the crowd and therefore, a start up should have some product/solution that is atleast ten times better than that provided in the market. This makes the company unique and sell-able.

It is exciting to think about this, if one forgets about the government and public policies and the types of market. I still do not get how can a whole crowd be so patriotic. The American-ism of the book is indisputable, and the love for the country is too evident. How does every US American book get that same?

I am not sure if that will happen with any other country. For my knowledge is limited. I know the affinity for languages and cultures are high in India. And even then when it comes to political decisions and the Government or Nation, it is best not spoken / mentioned in any literature.

By being a technical start-up conglomerate. USA can proudly showcase the technical talents. But how that is analogous to the rock music in USA may not be understood for the broader audience (for which the book was definitely not written) is a question the author should ask. It is nice to be local, but was that rock music and pencil sketched necessary. It kind of deviates the seriousness of a nicely written beginning and is a distraction best avoided. As a result, I could read the first three quarters way faster than the end of the book.

I do not know if it is to fill pages or lack of more cases like Tesla, Solyndra et al that the book mentions that made the passage go into such extent as to bring in mythology .

And also to write

“Every king was a living god.

Every god a murdered king.

Every king is just a scapegoat who has managed to delay his own execution.”

after elucidating examples such as Apple founder.

Overall a nice book. Worth reading especially the first half. It is a simple english book and the name of Peter Thiel and Bio to sell the book off. Not to undermine the effort, it is a very well written book for a content targeted for start up and easy to handle at 195 pages.

Book Review: Jumpstart Your Business: 10 Jolts to Ignite Your Entrepreneurial Spirit

Jumpstart Your Business: 10 Jolts to Ignite Your Entrepreneurial SpiritJumpstart Your Business: 10 Jolts to Ignite Your Entrepreneurial Spirit by Shawn Doyle

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a book meant to be used in proactive reading style. I could use it that way and had some notes and questions jotted down from the “jolts”. The book is written is a very confident style where the bragging part doesn’t come off as odd. The examples of success stories are kept to a common man’s level. Yes, it does not speak of Steve Jobs or Elon Musk , for a change?!
This book provides an easy top follow guideline that can be written down as a checklist. So once you have a brooding idea about startup then you can easily walk through the checklist and take the necessary steps and cross out the ones that you have already achieved.
The time I read book coincides with my participation in a Pre-Seed workshop in University at Buffalo. Here, I am part of a team that discuss strategies to help build a startup around the patented invention of Idea champion. This book steps through the essential steps of building a business around the entrepreneur , corresponds to the idea champion in the workshop.
In this process the book urges you to think, if not write down, about the answers to questions posed to the reader at the end of each chapter. These questions helps one understand the thought process behind the creation and maintenance of a company and assists in staging and forming the basis for the foresight, to see the work in action in near future.
The icing on the cake is the collection of books and authors at the end for further reading.

Some of the quotes (as it has become a standard with self help books) that I liked from this particular writing are:

” Business is as good as the people you associate with”

” It is what you know and who you know” that helps the business

” If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader” – John Quincy Adams

The book also quotes Think and Grow Rich atleast 3 times in its content, making it the next book to be read if you haven’t already done so. The context mostly is that ” You are what you think” and thinking positive. Which any religion, say Buddhism also mentions. After reading these books on ” business” and ” leadership ” I get this feeling that the American way of writing on business tends to project capitalism and money as basic motivation while the oriental spiritualism says the same without touching the money but peace and self satisfaction. I can’t blame one if it is through money that one achieves self satisfaction and peace of mind. But it is one big thing in such books were success is almost always tied to money. This works perfectly for people who believe in capitalism. “Ultimately it is the belief”
